What is the mystery behind its rapid growth? With this question in mind, AgroPages conducted an exclusive interview with Dr. James Qin, Chief Engineer at SINVOCHEM, who shared SINVOCHEM’s thoughts on business deployment, product features, innovation initiatives, strategic collaboration and development planning. These thoughts explained how SINVOCHEM could incorporate innovation, service and sustainability in its development strategy, to make itself an internationally-competitive agrochemical adjuvants and synergist provider.
"Looking into the future, SINVOCHEM is prepared to continue its adherence to its customer application scenario-oriented technical innovation strategy, and will make continued investments on R&D in cooperation with customers, while focusing on the establishment of an application scenario simulation system. We will also make the effort to develop the molecular structure design-focused polycarboxylate and polyether polyol formulate-in adjuvants, as well as tank-mix adjuvants that enhances pesticide molecular delivery in vivo,” Dr. Qin stressed. 

Q1. Please briefly introduce SINVOCHEM’s major business and global presence.
SINVOCHEM is a high-tech enterprise engaged in the research, production and marketing of formulate-in adjuvants and tank-mix adjuvants. Its annual spending on research and innovation accounts for 5-8% of its total sales. SINVOCHEM possesses a complete adjuvant synthesis and application scenario simulation research platform, supported by a constantly-learning and innovative technical team, enabling the company to become China's leading agrochemical adjuvants and synergist provider. 
The company has currently served nearly 600 customers worldwide, covering Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and part of South America. In order to better serve customers, we have assisted local agents and terminal customers to establish and improve their agrochemical laboratories, andprovided them with technical training free of charge. We are pleased to see the continued improvement of the product quality and research capacity of our partners, whose products and services are highly regarded by local customers in the pesticide industry.

Q2. Could you talk about SINVOCHEM’s product series&special strengths, and current application situations? What are the challenges in product development and market extension and possible solutions?
SINVOCHEM adheres to its atom economy concept and environmental-friendly design philosophy when developing pesticide adjuvants. 
Our product line covers formulate-in adjuvants and tank-mix adjuvants, including polymer adjuvants polycarboxylates, block polyethers, naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensates and wetting dispersants, such as non-ionic polyether, sulfonate and phosphate. The company's advanced controllable polymerization technology can precisely control product molecular structures. The polycarboxylate dispersant series produced by our company include the dispersant,SP-27001, which improves the processing efficiency of SC formulations; the dispersant, SP-OD3498D, which effectively inhibits crystal growth during the storage of OD formulations to improve stability; the cationic dispersant,SP-3275 which improves the high polyelectrolyte resistance and low temperature resistance of SC formulations to ensure compatibility with different tank-mix formulations; and SP-DF2222,which improves high temperature resistance in the course of processing DF formulations. At present, the polycarboxylate product series of our company have been successfully applied to the pesticide formulations SC, FS, OD, SE, CS, EW, WG, WP and DF.
The life cycle transfer process of pesticide molecules includes their dispersion and emulsification, the spatial transfer of pesticide liquid from the nozzle to the targeted surface, the transfer of liquid along the targeted surface and the transfer of pesticide molecules inside the target. Our company’s customer scenario-driven application innovation allows for the accurate simulation of the application scenarios of our R&D center. For example, the DF piloting system can accurately simulate real industrial production activity, and the lab’s low-speed wind tunnel system can simulate the impact of the natural environment on target deposition under outdoor spraying conditions. Our company has established a full data link collection system for the pesticide molecular transfer process. We are currently collecting data on pesticide molecule life-cycle transfers and pesticide liquid interface performance, together with field trial-related data. 
We have launched a series of tank mix adjuvants, such as the tank-mix compatible phosphate adjuvant, SP-42059, which is suitable for the mixed use of pesticides with chemical fertilizers; the vegetable oil adjuvant, SP-4506,which effectively reduces the rate of evaporation and increases the deposition of pesticide liquids while ensuring proper wetting, spread and reduction of drifting when broadly applied; the trisiloxane silicone polyether SP-4026 has good compatibility with soybean oil and methyl oleate. When SP-4026 is added at the level of 0.03% or less, it can significantly reduce the splashing and sputtering and improve the spread of pesticide liquids(service area reaches 2-10 times of area served without it); and the cationic SP-4806 which promotes the transfer of pesticide molecules to the plant in vivo to increase the biological activity of pesticide formulations. 
Marketing of novel pesticide molecules has become more and more difficult, whilst a mixture of products and enhancement of pesticide utilization is increasingly being challenged. On the other side, pesticides conflict with each other, especially the low melting point, high water solubility, and the easy decomposition properties make it difficult to produce stable formulations. Moreover, in the environment, the level of pesticide application and crop characteristics in different regions are different, so pesticide formulation needs to be adapted to the application scenario of customers. 
The establishment of SINVOCHEM’s application scenario simulation system allows for quick simulation of the formulation processing and the application scenarios. Combining the molecular structure design with synthesis of pesticide adjuvant, the application scenario simulation system is in a better position to provide a comprehensive pesticide formulation and adjuvant development solution. It is foreseeable that, based on the optimization of the existing adjuvant series, SINVOCHEM will be able to continue its releases of structurally designable and multi-functional polycarboxylate adjuvants and pesticide molecule transfer-enhanced tank-mix adjuvants. 

Q3. What kind of product development improvement have you made to cope with the changes in the Chinese agrochemical market?
In 2016, the Chinese government proposed a pesticide-use and fertilizer-use zero-growth action plan, which ensured restrictions on 76 kinds of toxic and hazardous solvents or adjuvants. The change of the pesticide application method into a time-saving and cost-saving UAV application demands pesticide formulation be adapted to mixed formulation applications at high concentration. SINVOCHEM has actively carried out the development of an environment-friendly substitutional adjuvant, such as replacing nonyl-phenol with the botanical cardanol or fatty alcohols, where the SP-503LE and SP-107LE non-ionic adjuvant series has been launched to replace the conventional NP series for use in a pesticide emulsifiable concentrate. A complete evaluation and characterization platform allows for lab simulation of aerial spraying scenario, collection and analysis of performance data of the pesticide molecular transfer process, which will guide the adjuvant structural adjustment and product combination so as to improve the pesticide molecular target deposition rate and biological activity. 
SINVOCHEM possesses a complete simulation and evaluation data collection and analysis system. For example, with the help of the multi-functional optical stabilizer Turbiscan, the stability of different formulations after mixing can be quickly determined; the optical thin-film evaporator can quickly simulate and determine the evaporation rate of the pesticide liquid in a specific environment; the high-speed camera can capture the rebound status of the liquid droplets hitting the target surface; the low-speed wind tunnel system can simulate the wind field environment to test the size of liquid droplets, drifting and deposition status; and the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry can analyze the biological activity of pesticide on the target. Based on the complete and intensive aerial application scenario platform, SINVOCHEM has launched its aerial pesticide application-product series.  

Q4.In your opinion, what are the driving factors to formulation innovation? What measures has your company taken to promote innovation? And what do you think of the role of adjuvant in formulation innovation?
Formulation’s technical innovation is rooted in the process of pesticide formulation processing and application, the purpose is to solve the existing problem or fulfill the needs under certain application scenarios. A good formulation should encompass the processing economic rationality, storage stability, the deposition rate and the high biological activity on the target.
A complete evaluation system, a leading molecular adjuvant design and synthesis capability, frequent interaction with customers and good cooperation with formulation manufacturers or characterization instrument suppliers all contribute to the advancement of SINVOCHEM's technical innovation. In the lifecycle of pesticide molecular transfer, the adjuvant structure and product combination will effectively ensure the right formulation processing and right control of the deposition of pesticide liquid on the target, which can improve the bioavailability of pesticide. Therefore, for a specific pesticide molecule, adjuvant will determine the quality of pesticide formulations. 

Q5.So far, who have your partners been? What are the cooperation models?
SINVOCHEM is dedicated to becoming a professional agrochemical adjuvants and synergist provider. Adjuvant product is a tangible form connecting SINVOCHEM with customers, whilst customized service is the cornerstone of the businesses of SINVOCHEM. For this reason, SINVOCHEM is continuously updating the customer application scenario simulation system, having established the data model covering the formulation processing and application scenario, and has conducted technical training courses both online and offline, which is a safeguard for fast and effective customer service. So far, SINVOCHEM has established cooperation with more than 70% of China’s top 100 pesticide enterprises. Meanwhile, in-depth cooperation has been initiated with major dealers and pesticide formulation manufacturers in Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and part of South America.  
Due to legal restrictions and the difficulty in the discovery of novel pesticide compounds, the integrated production of pesticide technical and pesticide formulation will become the mainstream of development of pesticide producers. SINVOCHEM is prepared to continue its strategic partnership with some high growth and technology-centric pesticide enterprises to jointly carry out formulation researches, indoor experiment and field trial to promote the development of the green and efficient formulations. 

Q6. What do you think of the changes in the global agrochemical industry? How will SINVOCHEM position and prepare itself to usher in the new challenges and new opportunities brought by the industry consolidation and the changes? 
Pesticide administration is becoming stricter and stricter while the discovery of novel chemical pesticide molecules has become more difficult. On the other side, biopesticide has attracted more attention. In the meantime, pesticide enterprises are collaborating with each other more closely, with the occurrence of intensified mergers and acquisitions. In the face of the complex and new situation in the agriculture industry, a satisfactory and timely service will be a solid foundation of business while innovative product line serves as the core of a manufacturer. SINVOCHEM will continue its customer application scenarios-driven innovation strategy and will continue to make an investment on R&D. 
Meanwhile, we will engage in more strategic cooperation with customers, focusing on updating the application scenario simulation system and development of the molecule-structured polycarboxylate and polyether polyol adjuvant as well as the molecule transfer-enhanced tank-mix adjuvant. Furthermore, SINVOCHEM will make efforts to continue the promotion of our pesticide adjuvant production process. Meanwhile, we will effectively improve the intrinsic safety of the chemical process and stabilize the quality of adjuvant to safeguard our provision of the comprehensive formulation processing service and supply of the synergist product. 

Q7.Could you please describe the development planning and the future vision of your company?
SINVOCHEM is positioned to be a professional agrochemical adjuvants and synergist provider. Our company will strengthen the build-up of the data link collection system for the pesticide molecular transfer process, as well as the establishment of a full-scale pesticide molecule life-cycle transfer and the pesticide liquid interface performance data, together with the field trial-related data. This will improve the pesticide molecular target deposition and the transfer rate in vivo so as to optimize the pesticide molecular structure design and the combination mode, thus to propel the formulation processing and the adjuvant synergism to a higher level. Furthermore, we will continue to develop our environment-friendly adjuvant design concept and the continuous production process, which aims to provide key support for the development of the global agrochemical industry.
